Summer teaching provides an incredible experience in China for those who are unable to devote a whole semester abroad.
The summer programs are much shorter than a regular semester. In China, there are two main semesters from September-January and then from February-June. July is designated for summer camps lasting from 3-5 weeks.
Summer teaching is often more in depth than the semester teaching. Teachers will be required to create a new lesson plan every day during the camp. For this reason most summer camps provide a formal curriculum and lessons to assist the teachers in creating these lessons. Summer teachers will see their 1-3 classes multiple times everyday, whereas semester teachers will teach 18-20 different classes once a week. Summer teachers will teach an average of 22 hours each week with Sundays free.
Participants are responsible for the following expenses:
Once at the camp location, participants receive free accommodations and meals for the duration of the camp. In addition they also receive a living stipend ranging from $300-500, depending on location and length of summer camp. Summer teachers are often taken on a 3-4 day tour at the end of the summer camp. Any traveling in addition to the camp organized excursions would be at the expense of the teacher. Participants should plan accordingly to bring enough funds with them to cover any travel or site seeing before and after the camp.
Applicants should be aware that the cost of participating in summer teaching will be more than is earned in China. Summer teaching should be pursued for the opportunity and experience and not as a source of income for the summer.
